Welcome to the first environmental engineering department providing undergraduate and graduate education in Turkey.
HISTORY & CURRENT STATUS
Dokuz Eylul University Department of Environmental Engineering (DEU-DEE) is the first department in Turkey that started undergraduate education in Environmental Engineering. The department was founded by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Samsunlu in 1975 as a part of Ege University Faculty of Engineering Sciences. After Dokuz Eylul University was founded in 1982, the department became a part of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In 1992, departments of Architecture and City Planning were separated to form the Faculty of Architecture and the Department of Environmental Engineering became a part of Faculty of Engineering.
The department has conducted regular undergraduate program between 1975 and 1992. During 1992-1997 period, an additional afterhours undergraduate program was implemented in parallel to the regular program and was terminated in 1997. Currently, regular undergraduate program is implemented in Turkish language with compulsory English preparatory class.
In addition to undergraduate education, the Department of Environmental Engineering also provides graduate education under Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs within the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. The language of graduate programs is English.
Currently, the undergraduate and graduate education is conducted by a large group of academic staff that includes 13 professors, 5 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 1 lecturer, 4 specialists and 8 graduate assistants. Moreover, a wide array of applied and research projects and consultancy and expert services are conducted within the department to fulfill the needs of the public and private sector. The department has a sophisticated laboratory infrastructure that consists of Water, Wastewater, Air Quality, Solid Waste, Microbiology, Sludge and Bioprocess laboratories where all types of pure and applied research services could be provided.
Since 2005, the department has the “MÜDEK accreditation certificate” given by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs. Furthermore, the department has gained international proficiency upon receipt of EURACE (European Accreditation of Engineering Programs) label in September 2011. In addition, the laboratories are accredited by TURKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanism.
The department is currently undertaking the necessary steps within the university to comply with the BOLOGNA Process. As a part of these studies, the department is now eligible to provide “Diploma Supplement” to all graduates starting with 2011-2012 academic year. Further efforts are underway to obtain the “Diploma Supplement Label” for 2012-2013 academic year.
